Excited and nervous
“I remember the day before I left. I think I spoke 5 words all day, I was so nervous! Also excited, but very nervous. It was a very complicated feeling to describe, all I knew was that I was moving far away, I was leaving the nest and it was the beginning of a new, big chapter. Now I can only think that It has been a great decision to study in the Netherlands! I am even thinking about enrolling in another course at HAN when I am done with communication. Isn’t that crazy!”
Great environment
“I’m also trying to get my little sister to apply for an engineering course or something she wants. HAN has an environment that makes it really easy to adjust, and my lecturers were there for me the whole time. It was also easy to find housing because HAN helped me. It is a great school, a great environment, and I think that the lecturers are really smart and capable, they really watch out for their students. I would totally recommend it to a lot of people from all over the world’’
Getting settled in
“The first week was also a bit of a blur because so many things were happening, and I was still pretty jet lagged. I do remember thinking it was so cold! I wore 3 sweaters and I was still cold. I would wear leggings and boots and other people were just wearing a coat and I was like; how can you do that? It is so cold! It was really, really cold.”
“The thing that made me feel welcome was definitely the buddy program. My mom came with me on the first days, we met my buddy together and she was really sweet! My buddy sat down with me and my mom and we had a coffee in the café of HAN and later she showed me all around and gave me tips and advice. It made such a difference to have someone there to talk to and ask questions.
“I feel at home in Arnhem now, I learned how to take care of myself, I made friends that taught me many things such as how to cook and we often went to the market together buying fruits and vegetables. I remember being in California during a break and missing Arnhem, when I came back to it felt so great and I was so happy to be back in Arnhem.”
Caring support
“The lecturers are great, smart, available, and easy to talk to. They seem determined to help us learn. Especially my mentor is really sweet she is someone I still talk to. We became friends, she met my boyfriend and came over for dinner. She has been there for me every time I needed her for whatever reason. I could always walk over to her office and talk about everything. I could unwind and get out of my head for a while. She has been a second mom for me.”
Great memories
“There are so many good memories! Frankly, I had such a blast in my first year going to the campus bar after classes. Socializing after a long day, or week or after exams. We always had a lot of fun, some beers, unwinding, not thinking about anything and chatting with classmates. I am very close with my classmates and in America I never had that in my class, we were palls, but we were not close as I am with my classmates now.”
“I can have a good chat with anyone and be very interested in what is going on with them, like talking to a good friend. We are all very involved with each other and we all get along. My class Is really open and welcoming. Ever since the beginning I felt like I could be myself without being judged. If I would give the wrong answer in class, I would never feel embarrassed, it would just be a point to learn about for everyone and we would move on. With my classmates it has always been a very open atmosphere for learning and being pals. I have not had a class like that before.”
HAN wants best for its students
"HAN truly want best for its students. For example, they are changing the communications module to adapt it to what students want and need. They are very good at listening to us. I was in a brainstorm session for the communication course, and I was like, it is really cool that they literally got together with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students to ask us about what we need and want. This is so important! I think not enough universities do this. HAN is really trying to give us the best and I appreciate that.”
Enjoying the classes and course
“I never missed a class because I actually like going to class. This has not happened to me before but now I actually love school. When I was in high school, I kind of passed, I did well, and I was a good student, but I was not really invested in the subjects quite like I am at HAN.
“Now is a good point in my life to focus on studying and be involved in the things I am learning. I am seeing the joy in learning and I am hungry to learn more. My course helped me realize what parts of communication I like and now I can chase those.”
“I like to write, I like to organize businesses and come up with marketing ideas, also consumers interest me, and I probably would not have figured that out if I was not doing this course. In America, a lot of students follow a set path such as law school. In the US you choose your school, your major, your career, and that is a set path. Whatever choice you make it is not very flexible.”
“In the Netherlands it is not so much like that, you do not have to force yourself into something that is not really for you. I met people that changed their study 2 or 3 times and I could never imagine that before; in America it is not a normal thing. The curriculum is also very different here, I talk to my friend in the US who also does communication and the things we do line up but I can tell that my course is so much more focussed than hers. Also, I learn about international awareness and I get to go abroad. This is not a given in the US, and especially no internships.”
Internship
“I did my placement in Spain; I had a blast! It was at a little marketing and communications agency/consultancy. It was really cool, I worked under a woman who is from Venezuela and I got along with her very well. She is serious, but fun and it has been so cool getting to know her well and become close with colleagues in a professional way. I have learned a lot about having professional relationships that are still enriching in a personal development kind of way. I did a lot of writing for websites, I did search engine optimization, I worked with keywords. Mostly digital marketing and working on projects. It has been rewarding.”
Life lessons
“I remember that when I came here, I had such a different view of the world and even of myself. It was nice to be in a different environment, it humbles you. I did not realize how interesting other places are, I just absolutely no idea. I was in California my whole life and we do not learn about other countries in a sufficient way. There is no better way to learn about new places than talking to people that are from there and hearing their stories.”
