What's a bachelor degree?
In the Netherlands, you can acquire a bachelor's degree at a university of applied sciences (like HAN) or a research university. What's the difference?
A bachelor's degree at a university of applied sciences is a 4-year program focused on practice-based learning. You gain a lot of knowledge and skills in practice. For example, you do an internship at an organization or company and work on real-life assignments from the field.
A bachelor's degree at a research university takes 3 years to complete and focuses on independent, research-oriented study in an academic or professional setting.
What's a master degree?
A master's degree represents an advanced level of study in a specific discipline. Master’s degrees, like other graduate degrees, require a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Typically, a master's degree takes 1 to 2 years of full-time study to complete.
You can choose for a master's degree at a research university or a university of applied sciences.
An academic master's at a research university is a stepping stone to a doctoral program. In an academic master, you focus on theoretical knowledge in a specific field of study. At a UAS like HAN, you learn practical skills and knowledge that you can immediately apply in the field you want to work in.

Most of our master's degrees are also available part-time. Depending on your personal circumstances, a part-time master may be a better fit for you.
The main difference between a master's degree part-time or a master's degree full-time is the time it takes to complete. A typical master’s program (that is, full-time) tends to take a year to complete. On the other hand, a part-time master’s takes about two years to complete.
There's no difference in title between a degree that's earned part-time or full-time.
Benefits of studying part-time
Depending on your personal circumstances, a part-time study may be a better fit for you. The main benefits of studying part-time are:
1. Flexibility: With a part-time master’s, you’re able to spread your study schedule across more days so that you can continue working or taking care of other responsibilities more easily.
2. Professional experience: Not only is work experience beneficial for your career growth, but it can also be beneficial to your educational experience. You can apply industry knowledge to your coursework.
3. Less intensive: A parttime master's takes longer to complete, but it will be less intensive as your coursework is extended over that time period. For many students, studying part-time helps to relieve stress and makes for a more enjoyable academic experience.
