Smart and sustainable solutions for the challenges of tomorrow require a multidisciplinary approach.

At the HAN BioCentre, we combine diverse expertise, closely linked to the research groups and education of the School of Applied Biosciences & Chemistry. By bringing science and practice together, we work on innovations that contribute to a healthy, sustainable, and data-driven future. In doing so, we focus on three key priorities:
• Biobased research for clean innovations that accelerate the transition to sustainable raw materials;
• Bioinformatics and data science for smart solutions and data-driven innovations;
• Drug discovery research for the faster development of innovative medicines.

Biobased Research

We develop knowledge regarding the production of valuable biomolecules from residual streams. We do this via fermentation (bioconversion) and by isolating biomolecules from biomass (biorefinery). Our expertise lies primarily in the use of fungi and yeasts for the production of biobased building blocks. Examples include microbial oil, biofoam, and alternative proteins. Additionally, we develop advanced chemical separation and analysis techniques for biorefinery.

Bioinformatics | Data Science

We are building expertise in the interpretation of sequencing data for applications in Agro, Food, and Health. In doing so, we focus on biodiversity, organic production, and soil quality, among other areas. We also develop data strategies and software tools for these domains. Additionally, we are increasingly deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to improve enzymes.

Drug Discovery

We focus on the research phase of drug development. In doing so, we search for new chemical compounds with a higher chance of success. To this end, we use natural substances, semi-synthesis, and protein-protein modulators to combat common diseases. Furthermore, we develop advanced testing systems, such as organoids. With these, we investigate the bioactivity of compounds in specific disease states and measure so-called ADMET parameters. These parameters provide insight into how a drug behaves in the body, how effective it is, and whether it can be safely administered.
