Ongoing projects Biobased Research

Connecting Fibers

To help the construction industry become fully biobased, in this project we are working on the development of a biobased adhesive based on biomass residual streams from bamboo, miscanthus, fiber hemp, or pruning wood for use in panel materials such as CLT or particleboard.

Reduce and use landfill methane

Can methane resources such as landfills and small digesters that are currently (partially) unused be used to produce valuable materials? That is the goal of this Biotech booster project.

Kombucha and biobased leather in one process

During the brewing of Kombucha, a residual stream is generated from which biobased leather can be made. How both processes can be optimally combined is being investigated in this KIEM GoFood project.

Paraformaldehyde as feedstock

This project focuses on the development of a sustainable and economically viable method to produce biochemicals via fermentation with yeast. A new feedstock, paraformaldehyde, is used in this process.

Molecular digital product passport for textile

The textile sector is under increasing pressure to become more sustainable and transparent. The Molecular Digital Product Passport project investigates how new technologies can support the implementation of digital product passports in the textile sector.

FiberFact

In the FiberFact project, innovative methods are being developed to measure recycled fibers and to stimulate a circular textile industry.

Microbial oil

In a time of alarming climate change, you need to look for bio-based alternatives to fossil fuels. But how do you produce paint, asphalt, or plastic, for example? Microbial oil can be a good biological raw material.

New projects Biobased Innovations

FOAM-UP

Fossil-based materials such as polystyrene are on the market in large volumes, while they are difficult to recycle and not biodegradable. Foamlab is developing a biological alternative based on bacterial cellulose. In this new RVO project we will investigate how to make this foam from industrial residual flows from Looop.

FungCows

The global demand for animal proteins such as meat and dairy continues to rise rapidly. To continue to provide this sustainably, alternative protein sources are being developed. In the FungCows project, milk proteins for vegan cheese are made with fungi that grow on grass via precision fermentation.

Ongoing projects Drug Discovery

Alpha-Helical Spiro Scaffolds (project ASPPIRe)

In this NWO project, we are developing a new technology for medicines. Through computational modeling, the synthesis of libraries of spirocyclic compounds, and screening for biological activity, new molecules are identified that could form the basis for future medicines.

REBORN

Bone-strengthening medications for osteoporosis and cancer have side effects that can damage the jaw, which can lead to major problems. In this project, REBORN, an innovative gel is being developed that helps the body repair lost bone and fights infections.

Access gates to the cell

With this research project, we hope to better understand how transport proteins influence the success of cancer therapy. With this knowledge, treatments can be designed more specifically, made more effective, and it may also be possible to better predict who will benefit from these therapies.
