HAN students appreciate atmosphere, lecturers and coaching

HAN students
The results of the 2026 National Student Survey have been announced. The NSS provides insight into what students think of their program and helps universities and universities of applied sciences further improve their education. Students share their opinions on areas such as social climate, lecturers, study coaching, study pressure and exams.

Once again this year, our students are positive about many aspects of their studies. The survey was completed by 38.3% of HAN students, well above the national average of 31%. Satisfaction increased in almost all areas compared with last year. In particular, students highly value the atmosphere, safety and study coaching.

Student welfare, atmosphere and social climate

Students once again rated the atmosphere at HAN highly: 4.12 on a scale of 1 to 5. Students also indicated that they feel free to be themselves at HAN: 4.13. These are important conditions for wellbeing and study success. The positive trend in the wellbeing theme (+0.07) shows that efforts in student wellbeing are having a positive impact. A safe and pleasant learning environment is an important foundation for both study success and personal development.

Lecturers and coaching

Students are positive about the expertise, commitment and accessibility of lecturers. In particular, lecturers’ knowledge of professional practice and their open attitude are highly appreciated. Study coaching also scored higher again than last year. Students value both the availability and the quality of study coaching.

Points for attention

There are also areas that require further improvement. For example, students report that timetables are sometimes published late or changed in an unclear way. Students would also like to see more flexibility within their program, for example in electives or internships. Programs are taking these signals into account in the further development of education.

Within the theme of exams and assessment, we see improvement, but scores remain below the national average. Students identified the clarity of assessment criteria, the quality of feedback and the alignment of exams with learning material as important areas for improvement.

Why is participation in the NSS important?

This year, 38.3% of students completed the survey. Although this is slightly lower than last year, it remains well above the national average of 31%. The high response rate provides a reliable picture of how students experience their program and offers valuable input for the continued improvement of education and student support.

I’m proud of the pleasant atmosphere and strong sense of safety at HAN. This helps students feel at home and comfortable enough to be themselves. It is also encouraging that students give very positive evaluations of the lecturers and the study coaching. These are important focus areas in our multi-year plans that we have invested heavily in over recent years. It is good to see these efforts having an effect, especially at a time when many students are experiencing increasing study pressure. Of course, there are still areas for improvement, such as timetabling and the topic of examination. We will continue working on these areas. It is also wonderful that so many students once again took the time to complete the survey. The results are extremely valuable every year.
