Microbial oil
Climate change caused by the excessive use of fossil fuels threatens our planet and leads, on a global level, to the search for alternatives. In this project we develop a sustainable process for a second-generation bio-oil made from biomass side streams.

Introduction
In the ‘Microbial Oil’ project, research group Biobased Innovations is working with a unique, oil-producing yeast strain that can grow on many different sugars. This allows plant-based waste streams to be converted into a bio-based oil. This yeast oil can be applied in many ways, from coatings, lubricating oil, and biodiesel to applications in plastics, asphalt, and cosmetics.
The research project is unique due to its multidisciplinary approach, which covers the entire chain from waste processing to the application of the bio-oil. Within the HAN BioCentre, the approach is also multidisciplinary through a combination of bioinformatics, molecular biology, fermentation technology, and analytical chemistry. Currently, work is underway on the development of the CRISPR-Cas technique in the oil-producing yeast strain.
Biobased Innovations
To prevent our beautiful planet from turning into a vast barren wasteland, the raw materials transition is an absolute necessity. In the Biobased Innovations research group, together with partners and students, we are working hard on the (further) development of key technologies that support this necessary transition.
