Training in Research Integrity at Universities of Applied Sciences

This basic training for junior/senior researchers, policy makers, members of a research ethics committee and data stewards aims to raise awareness about research integrity, clarify its scope, and highlight its importance. It also seeks to equip you with the tools to identify and discuss research integrity issues in your work.

In 2018, by signing the Dutch code of conduct for scientific integrity, the Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) committed to providing responsible research training to their researchers.

However, UASs have not systematically offered such training, leaving researchers dependent on university programs. To address this, seven UAS (Fontys, Avans, Hanze, Hogeschool Utrecht, InHolland, Hogescholol van Amsterdam and HAN University of applied sciences) – in collaboration with the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences –  developed training in ‘Responsible Research’.

To determine the training objectives and content, researchers from seven UASs were interviewed about their experiences with integrity issues. This research project was funded by ZonMW and called the TETRIAS-project (Translating researchers’ Experiences into Training on Research Integrity at universities of applied Sciences). The details and results are available in 'How to set the agenda for training in responsible conduct of research using the target audience as a narrative guide'.

The insights from the interviews formed the learning outcomes of the training courses, which include a basic training and a team training course. Existing educational materials from projects like NRIN and VIRT2UE were adapted or new materials were developed as needed. The training not only covers judicial and regulatory knowledge, guidelines, and codes of conduct but also focuses on recognizing and addressing ethical dilemmas. A complete syllabus and trainer's manual for both courses are now available.
