ISB publishes Springer Nature book chapter on sustainability-driven research
ISB has contributed a new book chapter to a Springer Nature volume, presenting a practical framework that supports research centers in embedding sustainability into their strategies and daily practices through collaborative change processes.

The study, titled A Systematic Approach to Repositioning the Focus of Research Centers Toward Sustainability: A Case Study from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences, […] highlights a successful practical case at ISB, introducing a novel approach to organizational change management that leverages collaborative, constructive, and structured team processes to help teams redefine their purpose and advance sustainability transitions. It presents the six-step TRANSITION framework, designed to guide the change process while emphasizing active team involvement throughout.
Showcasing the transition toward a sustainability-focused research agenda
The framework begins by aligning priorities with strategic goals, making sustainability a central focus. The team then takes stock of existing knowledge and expertise, mapping ongoing projects and evaluating individual contributions. Building on this foundation, they collaboratively develop a shared vision that situates their work within the broader sustainability transition journey. Next, actionable steps are defined, with both short- and long-term objectives integrated into the plan. The process culminates in embracing these changes, enhancing skills, and promoting knowledge transfer within the team and the wider community.

Part of an international dialogue
This publication is part of the World Sustainability Series, a leading peer-reviewed book collection dedicated to sustainable development. It builds on work Anna and Nikos presented during the Transatlantic Symposium on Sustainable Development at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2023 in Boston, where international experts explored how to accelerate sustainability transitions through research, collaboration and innovation.
A meaningful step for the HAN community
Being featured in this Springer Nature volume marks an important milestone for ISB. It highlights our commitment to contributing to the global conversation on sustainability and demonstrates how applied research can support transformative change.
The publication reinforces our ambition to serve as a catalyst for sustainable innovation and to inspire students, researchers and professional partners to work together toward a resilient future.
