HAN students again satisfied with their degree programs
Strength in stability: Our students are satisfied with many aspects of their studies, as they were last year and the year before. These are the results of the 2023 edition of the National Student Survey (NSE) published today.
Once again HAN scored higher than the national average for universities of applied sciences in several areas. Students particularly appreciate the atmosphere in their programs (4.09 on a scale of 1 to 5). Students also feel safe enough to be themselves at HAN (4.11 on a scale of 1 to 5). View the HAN fact sheet with all scores, per main theme and variable theme.
The National Student Survey (NSE) is distributed each year to nearly all students in Dutch higher education.
Small differences
Differences in student ratings on topics such as program content and format, lecturers and exams are small compared to last year, but mostly higher than the benchmark (national average). Outstanding: Atmosphere and sense of safety. These are important factors that contribute to the well-being of our students.
Does that mean everything is good? No, there is still work to be done in a number of areas (score < 3.5). Students are less satisfied with study facilities and timetables since the last measurement in 2022. The flexibility of the study program could also be improved. It’s not for nothing that we at HAN are committed to improving this in our multi-year policy plan.
"Important insight into things that are going well and things that could be better"
"It’s great that so many students took the time to complete the National Student Survey. The results give us as a board important insight into things that are going well and things that could be better. I’m especially pleased to see that the atmosphere and sense of safety at HAN are once again rated highly. Of course, there are things that can be improved and what we’ll focus on in the coming period; such as study facilities, timetables and the flexibility of programs."
High response
The response rate to the survey was excellent. Almost 41% of all students (just under 15,000) completed the survey. That’s higher than in 2022, and a remarkable result for a broad university of applied sciences like HAN. At the national level, 34% of all students in higher education participated in the 2023 NSE. HAN is pleased with this high level of engagement. The NSE organization ran a prize lottery for survey participants. 27 HAN students won a prize, including one grand prize.
Results by program
The results described above are for our university of applied sciences as a whole. Individual scores for each school and degree program may deviate from this. Did you complete the 2023 National Student Survey? The results are published in Matchfinder (in Dutch) on Studiekeuze123. Check out how your degree program scored.
What happens with the results?
The survey results are used to improve our programs, and are included in the data published on Studiekeuze123.nl, where prospective students can compare programs. Student ratings also form the basis for the annual Keuzegids course guide (in Dutch) and the education special published by the weekly magazine Elsevier (in Dutch).
