High satisfaction with atmosphere

Another 2 nice wins: HAN students are very satisfied with the atmosphere in their degree program, and appreciation for study coaching is also increasing. These are the results of the 2022 edition of the National Student Survey (NSE) published today.

STUDENT SATISFACTION

The National Student Survey (NSE) is distributed each year to nearly all students in Dutch higher education. Many HAN scores are comparable to the national average in higher education and last year's results for universities of applied sciences. Satisfaction with the degree program in general is also constant, both at HAN and in higher education. The combination of remote and in-person education has not led to a decrease in satisfaction, according to the Study123 press release.

Proud of good atmosphere

Most striking is the high satisfaction with the atmosphere in HAN's programs (4.10 on a scale of 1-5). In light of hybrid education, this is a result of which HAN is very proud. HAN students are also increasingly satisfied with the opportunities for study coaching. A valuable gain, with the consequences of lock down.

The result of questions about Exams and Assessment show a slight decrease in satisfaction compared to last year.

What is new is the specific question about the flexibility of the study program. The score is on the low side. HAN is a strong supporter of more flexible education and has chosen this as one of the strategic goals in its long-term policy Charting our Course 2022-2028. Through this flexible, future-oriented education, student development takes center stage and HAN educates students to become agile and reflective professionals.

And it’s not only the appreciation for the study coaching and the atmosphere in the programs that is rising. The study facilities and the connection with professional practice are other areas where student satisfaction is increasing.

RESPONSE FROM THE EXECUTIVE BOARD

Rob Verhofstad, chair of the Executive Board: "The results of the NSE give us as the board important input as to things that are going well and where we can improve. The fact that appreciation for the atmosphere has risen obviously pleases us. But there is also work to be done. For example, when it comes to the degree of flexibility of education. Coincidentally, that's also one of our strategic goals for the next few years, so we're working hard on that."

The fact that appreciation for the atmosphere has risen obviously pleases us.

RESPONSE RATE

The response rate by HAN students was excellent. Hybrid education was not a game changer in this. Nearly 40% of all students completed the survey questions, a remarkable score for a broad university of applied sciences like HAN. At the national level, 33.5% of all students in higher education participated in the 2022 NSE. HAN is pleased with this high level of engagement. The NSE organization runs a prize lottery for survey participants. 21 HAN students won a prize.

We discuss the survey results and use them to improve our degree programs. The results are used at a national level on Studiekeuze123.nl where prospective students can compare degree programs. The student ratings also form the basis for the annual Keuzegids course guide and the education special published by the weekly magazine Elsevier.
