Program
The Lean Engineering track within the Master in Engineering Systems will no longer be offered as of September 2022. Current students can complete their program and earn their master degree (MSc). A new track, Smart Manufacturing, will be offered from September 2023.
Lean Engineering in a nutshell
The full-time track of Lean Engineering runs for 3 semesters (18 months). You follow a series of practice-based modules and conclude with a major project. The track is part of the Master in Engineering Systems, so for some modules you join students from other tracks of this master. Semester 1 is about Systems Modeling and Applied Control. In semester 2 you follow the modules Process Development and Product Development. Semester 3 is all about your major project. Here you investigate a real-life problem in an industrial or research setting.
Systems Modeling and Applied Control
Semester 1 starts with the compulsory modules Systems Modeling and Applied Control. Apply your knowledge straight away during labs and real-life projects for lean engineering. And fine-tune your communication and research skills.
Compulsory modules
In Systems Modeling you learn how to model systems using the white-box model. Applied Control is about analyzing a system or model.
Academic calendar
The academic year runs from September to August. In that time you have 42 weeks of education. The rest of the time you have holidays.
Modules and lecture days
Here you can find a weekly schedule of all the modules for the Master Engineering Systems in semester 1 and 2. This includes the modules for the Lean Engineering track.
Track-specific modules
In the 2nd semester you take 2 track-specific modules. For the Lean Engineering track these are Lean Process Development and Lean Product Development.
Modules
In Lean Process Development you learn to apply lean principles and methods for the design, operational control and improvement of manufacturing processes. Lean Product Development is about applying lean principles and methods in the design and improvement of products.
Project on lean processes or products
Your 3rd and final semester is devoted to your major project. That’s where you investigate a Lean process or product issue. Where? At a company or research institute.
Major project
The major project is a final test of your ability to manage a project. And where you demonstrate your skills in communicating, reporting and presenting. You get the support of a HAN staff member and a supervisor from the company or institute.
Master of Science
After lots of study and hard work, you’ve earned your Master of Science in Engineering Systems. An internationally recognized degree as the program is accredited by the NVAO (Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders). Congratulations! Ready to get your career moving in the manufacturing industry?
